  • Crabapple (Malus Gladiator) 'Gladiator'

< Back Crabapple (Malus Gladiator) 'Gladiator' Gladiator™ Crabapple is an excellent ornamental tree for compact spaces or other size restrictions such as power lines. It's narrowly upright and columnar growth habit is adorned with a profusion of stunning, bright pink flowers in mid-spring followed by small reddish-purple fruit. Dark and glossy bronze-purple leaves remain lush all season long and are highly disease resistant. The pointy leaves transition to yellow as the autumn months set in and the showy purple pomes persist into late fall. Growing to an ideal height of 20 feet tall and 9 feet wide, 'Gladiator' is extremely cold hardy at USDA Hardiness zone 2-8. Highly adaptable to soil type or pH, but requires full sun and well-drained soil without standing water. After planting, and until established, this tree should be irrigated consistently to keep the soil conditions average to moist. Like most crabapples, occasional pruning and maintenance is required. Suckers should be removed if they develop in summer, but pruning should be done in late winter after the threat of extreme cold has passed to remove damaged, diseased, or misplaced growth. It has a low canopy with a typical clearance of 3 feet from the ground, and is suitable for planting under power lines. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for 40 years or more. Previous Next

  • Crabapple (MALUS 'DOLGO') - 'Dolgo'

< Back Crabapple (MALUS 'DOLGO') - 'Dolgo' A unique cultivar in that it produces larger, brilliant red crabapples than other varieties that are ideal for making jelly. ‘Dolgo’ crabapple also is an excellent pollinator for traditional apple trees. This hardy, early bloomer is full of prolific white blossoms in mid-spring that emerge from distinctive shell pink flower buds. Soon after, the pointy dark green leaves fill in the branches and then turn a lovely shade of yellow in the fall. A heavy yield of edible crabapples form in late summer. Good cold tolerance and a high level of disease resistance makes this an excellent choice as both an ornamental and edible in cooler climates. Reaching for a mature height of 35 feet with a spread of 30 feet, 'Dolgo' is a multipurpose tree. Cold hardy to an astounding USDA Hardiness zone 2, this tough tree makes an excellent pollinator for apple trees while still producing a nice crop of it's own edible crabapples. Often used for making jelly, these fruits add purpose to beauty. Plant this tree just like other fruiting trees - full sunlight with well-drained soil. Water consistently for best growth and production. Prune in late winter once the threat of extreme cold has passed. Will require another variety of crab or apple tree pollinator that blooms around the same time in order to set fruit. Previous Next

  • Apple - 'Honeycrisp' Apple Tree

< Back Apple - 'Honeycrisp' Apple Tree Explosively crisp and juicy, 'Honeycrisp' is a popular and beloved cultivar grown around the world! • Grape - 'Canadice' Grape

< Back Grape - 'Canadice' Grape The 'Canadice' variety stands up to cold winters and sub-zero temperatures and is one of the hardiest of seedless red grapes. It ripens earlier than most in late August and stores well. The flavor is described as somewhat spicy and when fully ripe are firm but not tough with a pleasant tang. Plants have good wintertime tolerance, early maturity, and disease resistance, making this a popular choice for gardeners and commercial growers alike. White flowers will produce their tender-skinned, medium-sized, light red colored fruit even with only one plant (self-pollinating). Good for snacking, making jelly, or wine. Hardy in zones 5a-8b (some suppliers claim it is hardy in zone 4 as well). Like other fruiting plants, grapes require full sun. 'Canadice' grows best in clay, loamy, or sandy soil. Expected yield is 20–40 lbs per plant per year under ideal conditions. Each plant will require a 12' diameter area. Note that seedless grape varieties do in fact possess seeds; however, the hard outer seed shell never forms, which means they can be easily consumed. Grape vines are perennial and in general can reach heights of up to 30′, preferring a trellis for climbing. For best productivity, they require regular care, including annual pruning and consistent watering in their first year. Previous Next

  • Crabapple (MALUS 'PERFECT PURPLE') - 'Perfect Purple'

< Back Crabapple (MALUS 'PERFECT PURPLE') - 'Perfect Purple' ‘Perfect Purple’ crabapple was developed by Ernie Copp in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. It has glossy, deep purple foliage that follows gorgeous deep-pink blossoms in spring. Summertime finds 'Perfect Purple' adorned by 1/2" purple-red fruit that persists on the tree for birds to eat. Uniform, consistent, somewhat upright growth habit and branching. Purple foliage maintains its color through fall. This very cold hardy crab has performed well in the North and Intermountain regions. Demonstrates good resistance to scab. This particular crabapple is larger than others reaching a mature height of around 25’ tall and spread of around 20’ wide. Cold hardy in USDA Hardiness Zone 3, 'Perfect Purple' is best grown in medium moisture, well-drained, acidic loams in full sun but will adapt to a wide range of soil conditions and pH. Drought tolerant once established. Highly tolerant of urban conditions. Highly adaptable to soil type or pH, but requires full sun and well-drained soil without standing water. After planting, and until established, this tree should be irrigated consistently to keep the soil conditions average to moist. Select a planting site with well-drained soil. Like most crabapples, occasional pruning and maintenance is required. Suckers should be removed if they develop in summer, but pruning should be done in late winter after the threat of extreme cold has passed to remove damaged, diseased, or misplaced growth. • Maple (ACER NEGUNDO) - 'Sensation'

< Back Maple (ACER NEGUNDO) - 'Sensation' ‘Sensation' was discovered by Warren Carnefix in Southwestern Idaho and it has a much improved branch structure and central leader than other varieties within the species. Spring foliage emerges brilliant in hues of copper red which fade to green with red highlights during the summer months then later turn soft, bright red in the fall. This unique and stunning tree is highly adaptable to site conditions including wet or dry soils and is extremely hardy. During it's youth, it forms a pyramidal shape and spreads as it ages. The trunk is silvery in tone and enhances the spectacular foliage beautifully. Furthermore, because it is a male seedless variety, it is considerably less attractive to boxelder bugs. Rising to a stature of 40 feet tall and roughly 30 feet wide, the 'Sensation Box Elder' Maple is nothing short of magnificent. Hardy to USDA Hardiness zone 3 and tough enough for dry, alkaline conditions, this makes an excellent specimen tree in the landscape, but looks handsome in group plantings as well. Plant this fast growing tree in full sun and water regularly. Once established, it only has moderate water requirements of 1/2" of water every 7-10 days. Pruning while young will help achieve the form you desire, but be sure to follow best pruning practices in order to promote health, provide air circulation, maintain a desirable shape, and to remove dead or damaged branches. Pruning is best done in late winter to early spring before the tree breaks dormancy. Protect the trunk especially while young to prevent damage from lawn mowing or other yard activities as well as winter burn. Previous Next

  • Lilac Tree (SYRINGA RETICULATA) - 'Ivory Silk'

< Back Lilac Tree (SYRINGA RETICULATA) - 'Ivory Silk' ‘Ivory Silk’ Lilac carries huge clusters of heavy, creamy white blossoms in early summer. Although a Lilac, this member of the species is quite different in appearance than those with which gardeners are more familiar. Its upright habit is more consistent and flowers more generously than other varieties in this species. It has an oval or pyramidal form when young but spreads to a rounded shape as it grows older. The fragrance from 'Ivory Silk' is more suggestive of a Privet than a traditional Lilac. Reaching 25 feet tall and 15 feet wide at maturity, 'Ivory Silk' is faster growing than the parent Japanese Tree Lilac. Grows well in USDA Hardiness zones 3-6 and has an oval, compact dense form. When selecting a planting site, be sure to provide full sun and well-drained soil conditions. Tolerates clay, loam, sand, acidic, and slightly alkaline soil types. Maintain evenly moist soil conditions, but not standing water. Moderately drought tolerant and soil salt tolerant. Prune only after flowering is past. Previous Next

  • Pine, Mountain (PINUS MUGO) - 'Pumilio'

< Back Pine, Mountain (PINUS MUGO) - 'Pumilio' Hardy evergreen shrub with short, dark green needles and a compact, dense, spreading habit of upright branches. Adorned with small, dark brown cones and unique 'candles' of new growth. Grown mostly for its beautiful foliage and low, open, spreading habit. This slow-growing, naturally dwarf version of Mugo Pine is hardy and adds color, lower level of height, and texture to landscapes. Relatively low maintenance, but can be pruned as needed. Drought tolerant. The somewhat globe, rounded form of 'Pumilio' reaches about 3-4 feet tall and 6 feet wide, but is capable of spreading further while maintaining its relatively low height. It grows best in full sun to partial sun and is hardy to USDA Hardiness Zone 3. Of the small conifers, this is the easiest to grow in gardens and is often used as an accent or in mass plantings, or in rock gardens in combination with boulders. Popular as an evergreen contrast in perennial borders; adds texture variation when planted with other dwarf shrubs. Best used amidst other dwarf shrubs needing texture variations. Although relatively trouble free, it may be susceptible to wind damage. Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season to establish an extensive root system. Reduce watering frequency once established and water when the top 2 inches of soil become dry. Fertilize in the spring before new growth appears with a general purpose fertilizer. Grows best in enriched, loamy, and well-drained soils but is not particular to soil type or pH and is able to handle environmental salt. Highly tolerant of urban pollution and drought tolerant. It will not thrive, and may even die, in standing water. Low maintenance, but if pruning is desired, only trim back the new growth of the current season; remove dieback as needed. Previous Next
